System of a Down Frontman Serj Tankian Unveils Multi-Sensory Art Exhibit

Serj Tankian

The Wentworth Art Gallery in Short Hills, Essex County, will host System of a Down singer-songwriter-producer-multi-instrumentalist Serj Tankian, 57, and his collection of original musical paintings, mixed-media works and augmented reality art on August 24. Serj has been a visionary in music, poetry, visual art and political activism for the better part of three decades. He will personally host this event the week of his band’s triumphant return to New Jersey at MetLife Stadium on Route 3 in East Rutherford August 27 and 28. Each painting is paired with a musical composition crafted specifically for the piece.  According to the band’s rep, “viewers can unlock these compositions through Arloopa, a free app that uses optical recognition to bring each work to life through sound.”

Serj, born in Lebanon to Armenian parents, raised in Los Angeles, has sold upwards of 40 million albums with System of a Down, winning a Grammy Award in the process. "I see music and visual art as extensions of the same soul,” he says. “When I paint, I’m composing. When I compose, I’m painting. Each informs the other in ways words cannot express. Art is a vehicle for truth and transcendence, and through this fusion of sound and image, I aim to create a deeper connection—one that invites not just observation, but participation. My goal is to awaken the senses, provoke thought, and encourage reflection on the interconnectedness of all things."
